If you are choosing between ActiveCampaign and Mailchimp, you are really choosing between an automation-first tool and a newsletter-first tool with a free plan. In the ActiveCampaign vs Mailchimp decision, pick Mailchimp if you want to start free and your automations are short. Pick ActiveCampaign if multi-step automation, or a sales pipeline next to your email, is the reason you are buying.
All facts come from each vendor’s official pages, read on 6 October 2026. We did not test either tool hands-on, and we have no affiliate deal with either vendor.
Price scope: the US-dollar examples are the earlier documented display, not a newly verified US checkout quote. Current retrieval may localize currency. Match currency, contact tier, billing selection and renewal terms before comparing costs.
ActiveCampaign vs Mailchimp at a glance
The table matches plans by what they do, not by name. Prices are as each vendor publishes them, and the two vendors show different contact tiers by default, so treat the figures as a starting point for a quote.
| Role | ActiveCampaign | Mailchimp |
|---|---|---|
| Free start | No free plan; 14-day trial | Free: 250 contacts, 500 sends a month, no automation listed |
| Entry paid plan | Starter: $15 a month at 1,000 contacts; 5 actions per automation; 1 user | Essentials: US$13 a month for 12 months at 0 to 500 contacts; 4 flow steps; 3 seats |
| Full automation | Plus: $49 a month at 1,000 contacts; unlimited actions; landing pages | Standard: US$20 a month for 12 months at 0 to 500 contacts; up to 200 flows; 5 seats |
| Advanced | Pro: $79 a month at 1,000 contacts; 3 users; predictive and conditional content | Premium: US$350 a month for 12 months at 0 to 500 contacts; unlimited seats; phone support |
| Large teams | Enterprise: $145 a month at 1,000 contacts; 5 users; single sign-on | Premium covers this role |

ActiveCampaign’s prices come from its own comparison page, which says the data is “accurate as of August 2026” but does not state whether they are monthly or annual billing. Do not infer that comparison page’s billing period from another page’s selector; obtain a current matched quote. That comparison page also quotes Mailchimp prices; we leave those out because we could not confirm them on Mailchimp’s own page.
How to decide in five minutes
Look at your first automation. Write it down step by step: the trigger, each email, each wait and each condition. Then count the steps and apply these rules.
- Four steps or fewer, small list, tight budget: Mailchimp. Free covers up to 250 contacts, and Essentials allows up to 4 flow steps.
- Five actions or fewer, one user: ActiveCampaign Starter may be enough.
- More steps, branches or several journeys: ActiveCampaign Plus or above, or Mailchimp Standard. Trial both.
- You track deals and want them next to email: ActiveCampaign.
- Three people need logins on the cheapest paid plan: Mailchimp Essentials includes 3 seats; ActiveCampaign Starter includes 1, with one more available to buy.
- Your list has many unsubscribed contacts you keep for records: check the billing rules below before anything else.
Which is cheaper, ActiveCampaign or Mailchimp?
Mailchimp is cheaper to start, because it is free up to 250 contacts and Essentials is US$13 a month for 12 months at 0 to 500 contacts. As your list grows, the answer depends on two things the headline prices hide: which contacts count, and what happens after month 12.
Which contacts count. Mailchimp’s help centre says subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts all count toward your total, across all audiences. Archived, cleaned and deleted contacts do not. ActiveCampaign bills per unique contact, not per list, and its comparison page says it never charges for unsubscribed contacts. A list with many old unsubscribes can sit in a higher tier on Mailchimp.
What happens after 12 months. Mailchimp’s displayed prices are introductory for 12 months. The regular price did not appear in the text we could read, so ask for it before you commit.
Going over your limit. Mailchimp does not suspend a paid account that goes over its contact limit mid-cycle; it adds a charge to your bill. On the Free plan, sending is put on hold until you upgrade or remove contacts.
ActiveCampaign pricing plans: what each tier adds
ActiveCampaign has four email plans, priced by contact count. Starter and Plus send up to 10 times your contact limit each month, Pro 12 times and Enterprise 15 times.
| Plan | Price at 1,000 contacts | Users | Automation | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $15 a month | 1 | 5 actions per automation | Email marketing, limited segmentation; up to 25,000 contacts |
| Plus | $49 a month | 1 (more can be bought) | Unlimited actions | Landing pages, standard segmentation, CRM add-ons available |
| Pro | $79 a month | 3 | Unlimited actions | Advanced segmentation, predictive and conditional content, attribution tracking |
| Enterprise | $145 a month | 5 | Unlimited actions | Premium segmentation, custom objects, single sign-on, dedicated account team |
Prices are from ActiveCampaign’s comparison page (August 2026); the billing period is not stated there. The pricing page showed placeholder dashes instead of figures in the text we could read on 6 October 2026, so get a quote at your exact contact count.
The pricing page also lists add-ons, including extra users, SMS, transactional email, WhatsApp lines and custom reporting. It says there are no setup fees, and it advertises a full refund if you are not satisfied after 30 days. Read the refund terms before relying on them.
Is ActiveCampaign free?
No. ActiveCampaign offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card needed, but no permanent free plan. If paying nothing matters most, Mailchimp’s free plan (250 contacts, 500 sends a month, 1 seat) is the only free option of the two.
Use the 14 days well. Build your real first automation in the trial rather than browsing templates, so you learn which plan you need before the trial ends.
Is ActiveCampaign a CRM?
ActiveCampaign is an email marketing and automation platform that also sells CRM tooling. Its current pricing page offers Enhanced CRM as an add-on. Do not treat a help article’s plan labels as proof that a new Starter subscription includes pipelines; confirm the exact package in the quote.
- Pipelines (Enhanced CRM add-on): pipeline management, deal records, account records and lead scoring.
- Sales Engagement (Enhanced CRM add-on): everything in Pipelines plus automated 1:1 email and win probability.
The plan overview says both add-ons are available with Plus, Professional and Enterprise. ActiveCampaign’s CRM page says packages start at $15 a month, scaling with contact volume and features. Mailchimp’s pricing page lists no deals or CRM add-on.
So if your sales process is a simple pipeline next to your marketing, ActiveCampaign may cover it. If you need a full sales CRM, compare a dedicated one too. Our guide to choosing a CRM for a small sales team explains what to test.
How do automation and segmentation compare?
Automation is the main gap between the two entry plans. ActiveCampaign Starter allows 5 actions per automation; Plus and above list unlimited actions. Mailchimp Essentials allows up to 4 flow steps; Standard and Premium allow up to 200 flows.
Segmentation follows the same ladder. ActiveCampaign lists limited segmentation on Starter, standard on Plus, advanced on Pro and premium on Enterprise. Check A/B and multivariate testing separately in Mailchimp’s current feature matrix; these are distinct capabilities and should not be assumed to share a tier boundary.
Neither vendor’s page says exactly how waits and conditions count toward these limits. Ask, or test it in the trial with your real sequence.
Forms, landing pages and other channels
ActiveCampaign lists landing pages from Plus; the Starter card does not include them. Mailchimp lists popup forms on every plan, including Free. Check which form and page features you need before picking the cheapest tier.
For other channels, ActiveCampaign offers SMS and WhatsApp as add-ons, with separate WhatsApp plans. Mailchimp lists an SMS and MMS add-on for Standard and Premium.
What about deliverability, support and integrations?
Deliverability. ActiveCampaign’s comparison page makes a deliverability claim. We have not independently measured inbox placement or audited the current US search results. Deliverability depends heavily on your own list quality and domain setup, so send test campaigns from both during your trial.
Support. Mailchimp lists 24/7 email and chat support on Standard, and phone and priority support on Premium; Free includes email support for the first 30 days. ActiveCampaign lists free migration and onboarding on its pricing page and a dedicated account team on Enterprise.
Integrations. ActiveCampaign lists standard CRM and ecommerce integrations on Starter and Plus, and premium ones on higher tiers. Check that the specific apps you use, such as your shop or booking tool, appear in each vendor’s integration directory.
ActiveCampaign pricing UK: what to check
ActiveCampaign’s pricing page offers GBP, so UK buyers can see prices in pounds. It also offers AUD, CAD and EUR. Mailchimp shows USD by default with a currency selector.
Before comparing, set both to the same currency and billing period. Ask each vendor how VAT is added for your business. Australian buyers can follow the same steps with AUD and GST.
Worked example: a 450-contact service business
This is a hypothetical calculation, not a test. A small accounting practice has 450 contacts, sends a monthly newsletter, and wants a five-email onboarding sequence with one condition.
- Mailchimp Free: no. 450 is over the 250-contact limit, and Free lists no automation.
- Mailchimp Essentials: US$13 a month, or US$156 in year one. But five emails plus waits and a condition exceed 4 flow steps.
- Mailchimp Standard: US$20 a month for 12 months at 0 to 500 contacts, so US$240 in year one. This fits the sequence.
- ActiveCampaign Starter: five emails alone use the 5-action limit, before any waits or conditions. This sequence likely needs Plus.
- ActiveCampaign Plus: $49 a month at 1,000 contacts, or $588 a year. The comparison page lists no smaller tier, so ask whether a 500-contact price exists.
These figures are not matched quotes: contact tiers, billing period and renewal terms differ. They cannot establish a verified price winner. Two further issues affect a matched quote. If 60 of the 450 contacts are unsubscribed, Mailchimp still counts them, and growth past 500 moves you up a tier. And Mailchimp’s year-two price is the regular price, which we could not read.
Who should skip both?
Skip both if you only send a newsletter to a list under 10,000 and never automate: Kit’s free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers but includes no automations. If you want a free plan with some automation, MailerLite’s free plan covers up to 250 subscribers with 3 automations.
Skip both, too, if what you really need is a sales CRM with email on the side. Start with a CRM evaluation instead. See the MailerLite and Kit profiles for sourced limits.
How to trial both fairly
- Write your first automation on paper, step by step.
- Build it in an ActiveCampaign trial and a Mailchimp account.
- Send test emails to addresses on Gmail and Outlook and check how they look and where they land.
- Note the cheapest plan on which each version runs in full.
- Count your contacts the way each vendor bills them, including unsubscribes for Mailchimp.
- Price both at that count, same currency, same billing period, for two years.

ActiveCampaign vs Mailchimp vs Brevo: when to widen the shortlist
If neither of these two platforms matches your sending plan, add Brevo to the comparison. For an email platform comparison in 2026, start with the same contact count, sending calendar and required journey; a different billing unit does not by itself establish the cheapest option.
| Tool | Question to answer before selecting a plan |
|---|---|
| ActiveCampaign | Does the exact plan include every action and branch in your required automation? |
| Mailchimp | What do your contact count, sends and required journey make the subscription cost? |
| Brevo | Do daily and monthly sending allowances, storage and automation limits fit the same workload? |
Read Brevo vs Mailchimp for the documented sending and upgrade trade-offs and the email platform buying guide for the common trial checklist. This is a three-tool decision framework, not a tested deliverability ranking.

Common questions
- Is ActiveCampaign better than Mailchimp?
- It depends on what you send. ActiveCampaign lists unlimited automation actions from its Plus plan ; CRM package access needs a separate quote check, so it suits automation-led and sales-led businesses. Mailchimp has a free plan and 3 seats on Essentials, so it suits newsletter-first teams on a small budget.
- Is ActiveCampaign a CRM?
- ActiveCampaign is mainly an email marketing and automation platform with CRM features. Its current pricing page offers Enhanced CRM as an add-on. Help pages and marketing pages can describe different packages, so confirm eligibility, pipeline access and the total subscription charge rather than assuming they are included in Starter.
- How much does ActiveCampaign cost?
- ActiveCampaign's comparison page, dated August 2026, lists Starter at $15, Plus at $49, Pro at $79 and Enterprise at $145 a month for 1,000 contacts. It does not state the billing period, and the pricing page showed placeholders when we checked on 6 October 2026. Get a quote for your contact count and currency.
- Is ActiveCampaign free?
- No. ActiveCampaign offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card needed, but no permanent free plan. Its pricing page also advertises a full refund if you are not satisfied after 30 days. Mailchimp has a free plan for up to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month.
- Is Mailchimp cheaper than ActiveCampaign?
- Mailchimp offers the lower entry cost when its Free plan covers the entire requirement: Mailchimp is free up to 250 contacts and Essentials is US$13 a month for 12 months at 0 to 500 contacts. But Mailchimp bills unsubscribed contacts and its prices rise after 12 months. Price both at your real contact count for two years, not one.
- Does ActiveCampaign charge for unsubscribed contacts?
- ActiveCampaign's comparison page says it never charges for unsubscribed contacts, and its help centre says billing is per unique contact, not per list. Mailchimp's help centre says subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts all count toward your total.
- Does ActiveCampaign show prices in pounds?
- Yes. ActiveCampaign's pricing page offers GBP, as well as USD, BRL, CAD, AUD and EUR. Check whether VAT is added at checkout and compare the same billing period when you price Mailchimp.
- Is ActiveCampaign easy to use?
- We have not tested it, so we cannot say. The pricing page lists free migration and onboarding with no setup fees, and the trial needs no credit card. Starter limits each automation to 5 actions, which keeps simple journeys simple but may force an upgrade.
