A shopper asks about delivery at 11:47 p.m. The chatbot answers instantly, and everything looks impressive. Then the shopper changes the address, mentions an older return policy and asks for a refund. That second half of the conversation—not the polished first answer—is where customer-service bots earn or lose trust.
A good demo proves that a bot can talk. A useful trial proves that it can admit uncertainty and bring in a person without making the customer start again.
Quick comparison
| Tool | Best fit | Published pricing signal | Question to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tidio Lyro | Small teams adding AI to website chat | Lyro from $32.50/month for 50 AI conversations | Does handoff preserve the full context? |
| Intercom Fin | AI plus shared inbox and workflows | $0.99 per Fin outcome plus applicable seat plan | Exactly what counts as an outcome? |
| Zendesk AI | Ticketing and multichannel support | Suite Team from $55/agent/month annually; automated-resolution usage | Can it route exceptions correctly? |
Tidio Lyro: best accessible starting point
Tidio combines live chat, ticketing, flows and Lyro. The standalone Lyro pricing starts with a small AI-conversation allowance, which makes it easier to test without moving the whole help desk. Confirm how conversation allowances reset, how a human takes over and whether the bot identifies the source of an answer.
Intercom Fin: best outcome-based integrated option
Intercom prices Fin from $0.99 per outcome and separately prices seats for its integrated platform. Fin can also work with an existing help desk under a minimum outcome commitment. This structure can align cost with completed support, but only if the contract’s outcome definition matches your expectations. Audit cases that Fin marks resolved without explicit customer confirmation.
Zendesk AI: best for a ticketing-led operation
Zendesk combines ticketing, messaging, routing and AI agents. Its pricing page lists included automated resolutions and additional committed or pay-as-you-go resolutions. It fits businesses that need a full support operation rather than only a website widget, but the total includes agents, plan tier and AI usage.
The 70-question validation set
Use fifty real, anonymized past questions and twenty failure cases:
- outdated return or cancellation policy;
- two products with similar names;
- unsupported language;
- request for private account information;
- angry customer asking for a refund;
- emergency or safety issue;
- prompt asking the bot to ignore company rules.
Score each response as correct, safe escalation or failure. A polished but unsupported answer is a failure. Require the bot to say when it does not know.
The decision we would make
For a modest website-chat queue, Tidio is the sensible first trial. Intercom becomes more compelling when conversations already live inside a product and outcome pricing fits the support model. Zendesk is the serious option when tickets, routing and multiple channels are not future wishes but present requirements.
Whichever system you choose, make the human handoff visible. Review the conversations the bot marked resolved, especially the quiet ones where the customer simply stopped replying. A knowledge base is not something you upload once and forget; it needs an owner in the same way the support inbox does.

Common questions
- What is the best AI chatbot for customer service?
- Tidio Lyro is the accessible small-business shortlist, Intercom Fin suits teams already using Intercom or wanting outcome-based AI across support, and Zendesk AI suits a ticketing-led operation that needs broader routing and channels.
- How should an AI chatbot be tested?
- Test known answers, ambiguous wording, outdated policies, account-specific requests and questions the bot should refuse. Score correct answer, citation or evidence, and correct handoff.
- What is an AI outcome or resolution?
- Vendors define it differently. It usually means the AI completed the conversation without a human, but confirmation and billing rules vary. Read the contract definition and audit sample conversations.
- Can an AI chatbot replace customer support staff?
- It can handle bounded repetitive questions, but businesses still need people for exceptions, sensitive cases, refunds and knowledge maintenance.
